In his famous speech in West Berlin, on June 26, 1963, U.S. president John F. Kennedy erroneously juxtaposed his ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ and ‘civis Romanus sum’. Why erroneously? Because the pride for being a Roman citizen came from the Roman code of law of 450 BC. The leges duodecim tabularum stated the rights and duties of the Roman citizen in a sufficiently comprehensive manner and, for this very reason, were accessible to everyone in the Forum.
